Commonly Asked Questions
What percentage of my gift goes to support health and human service programs?
100% of donors' gifts directed to the United Way of Tompkins County Community Care Fund, forty-two member organizations, special initiatives, or another United Way will benefit those programs and services. This is made possible because of the generous gifts from the Corporate Cornerstone Partners. All other designations are charged a nominal processing fee by United Way of Tompkins County, not to exceed 2% of the total gift amount.
What is the Community Care Fund?
By giving through the Community Care Fund, your gift is combined with other contributions making a positive difference in the lives of Tompkins County residents. This pool of money is then allocated by community Fund Distribution volunteers to United Way of Tompkins County's 42 Partner Organizations based on careful review, fiscal responsibility, and funding priorities for types of services provided.
All Community Care Fund donations benefit health and human service programs in Tompkins County.
Can I direct or exclude my gift to a specific United Way of Tompkins County member organization?
Yes, through donor designation, you have the option of designating your gift to any United Way Member Organization or non-member 501 (c) (3) health and human service organization. United Way Member Organizations receive their designations in addition to what is allocated to them from the Community Care Fund.
A donor may choose to exclude a particular UWTC Member Organization by noting that on the pledge card. United Way of Tompkins County honors its donors' wishes.
I designated to a specific organization last year and I never received a confirmation letter. Why?
United Way tracks all donor designations to assure that gifts are reaching the organizations of the donors' choice. There is a check off box on the pledge card that must be used if the donors want their gifts acknowledged by the member or non-member organizations.
Can I direct my United Way donation to go to the Boy Scouts?
The Boy Scouts are no longer a UWTC member organization because they are unable to sign the mandatory nondiscrimination policy, a requirement for all of UWTC's member organizations. However, donors can still designate their gifts to the Boy Scouts through the annual Community Campaign.
I live in another county. Is it possible to give all or part of my donation to the county where I live?
Your interest in helping people in your home community is appreciated. United Way has a reciprocal arrangement with United Ways across the United States. If you want your donation sent to a different county United Way, you may designate it on the pledge card and that United Way will receive it.
