Stephen E. Garner Summers of Service Program

The Summers of Service Program provides paid, 121 hour summer internships of $1,600 each for Tompkins County high school students completing 10th, 11th, or 12th grade in 2022. Internships will give high school students the opportunity to learn about the health and human services sector in Tompkins County. Each intern will have a designated internship supervisor at their host site and will receive a midpoint and final performance evaluation to help them grow and learn from the experience. At the conclusion of the 121 internship hours, the host site may opt to offer their intern the opportunity to continue their employment.

The Advocacy Center of Tompkins County- Youth Education Intern

The Youth Education Intern will assist the Youth Educator in improving existing curricula and educational content, as well as developing supplemental youth audience programming, social media content, and outreach materials that center around sexual and relationship violence prevention. The Youth Education Intern will be asked to creatively consider ways in which Tompkins County teens can become involved with our agency’s mission. This may include assisting the Youth Educator in creating events, promoting various agency events, representing the agency at events with staff, and researching relevant topics.

The purpose of this position is to assist Finger Lakes ReUse with a project to analyze the materials management practices and overflow of materials specific to ReUse’s clothing/textiles department. The position will involve hands-on research and data collection in the clothing donation processing area, as well as work with the administrative team to analyze the data. Other areas where the intern will be involved include helping with research and communications, such as identifying and quantifying impacts of reuse, and helping with social media, marketing, and nonprofit development.

Foodnet Meals On Wheels – Food Prep Intern

Foodnet Meals on Wheels’ mission is to provide meals and other nutrition services that promote dignity, well-being and independence for older adults and other persons in need in Tompkins County. We envision a community in which senior hunger is eliminated, supportive services are readily accessible, and our neighbors enjoy independence without isolation. The Food Prep Intern will assist the Food Service Operations Manager in the daily preparation and packaging of over 500 meals to be delivered out into the community; gaining experience in food service meal production, skills with portion control, industrial kitchen equipment use, dish room and dish washing experiences will be highlighted with on-the-job training. These skills are valuable for those seeking employment in the hospitality/restaurant industry.

Varna Community Association – Program Assistant/Intern

The Varna Community Association seeks an intern to assist with children's activities and to help get our new childcare program - the Varna Summer Program -- off to a successful and fun start! Because the Varna Summer Program will be limited to about 24 children ages 5 to 12, the intern will get to know all of the kids while assisting with activities such as outdoor sports, lawn games, playground activities, and arts & crafts. Depending on the skills and interests of the intern, they may be asked to lead games, assist with food preparation, teach simple crafts, and so forth.
